Wind and Tides is marine weather for people who spend their time on the water: NOAA forecasts, tide and current predictions, live buoy conditions, and nautical charts for sailing, boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, kiteboarding, and open water swimming. There are apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android, plus a website.
It started in 2006 as a single page website of San Francisco Bay wind, tide, and current data: the conditions worth checking before heading out, gathered onto one page instead of scattered across a half-dozen NOAA sites. Bay Area sailors, windsurfers, and kiteboarders found it, and by 2011, enough of them were checking it from their phones that we shipped an iPhone app. We recently rewrote it to be cross platform using Kotlin Multiplatform with Compose Multiplatform and now ship iOS and Android from that codebase.
The job is aggregation. Wind and Tides pulls NOAA ENC nautical charts, NWS marine zone forecasts, NOAA tide and current predictions, gridded weather, and live NDBC buoy observations, and puts them all in one place for your home waters. The latest release added a chart plotter, backed by our own high-speed Cloudflare-hosted chart server: pan and zoom for depths, hazards, buoys, and channel markers right alongside the forecast.
It’s built for the moment you’re standing on the dock deciding whether to go out: the answer should be one glance away. Fifteen years and 4.7 stars on the App Store later, we’re still shipping: more regions, better charts, and whatever the people using it ask for next.
